BETTER
SCHOOLS

Join me and help support schools in the Portland area. Every child has the right to an engaging and transformative school experience.

One that nurtures their curiosities, affirms their histories, and prepares them for the future by investing in the present. In 1990, the City of Portland passed Measure 5, essentially transferring the responsibility of school funding from the city to the state. Previously, the City of Portland allocated school funding with neighborhood property taxes, resulting in less funding for schools in areas that have harmfully been labeled "bad" and its youth "at-risk." Measure 5 necessarily capped property taxes dedicated to school funding, but the disparities remain in our schools and it is our students who feel it.

While we cannot rewrite decades of bewildering racist policy and behavior, by investing local dollars in our schools, we can actively participate in a better future. I have pulled together a list of schools based on the state's report card and Portland's property maps. The schools on my list are located in lower property-tax areas and need proper funding to pay teachers (and reimburse them for out-of-pocket classroom expenses) and afford adequate learning tools, granting a clearer pathway to success for students.

See below for more information about the current recipient, the Oliver P. Lent School. I encourage you to check out their facebook pages as well so you can get a better look at our future generation… kids are SO wonderful and everyone deserves an equal learning opportunity.
